Sex Education for Student Police Cadets – Annual Meet, Thrissur District

From packaging sex ed as health education to openly being invited for sex ed class, announcing “sex ed” openly by the teachers and students, students being aware of terms such as ‘gender justice’, ‘gender’, ‘sex’, ‘contraception’, ‘LGBT’, etc, this was definitely a great start to the year 2025. From being a lone sex educator to making this job seem a bit normal with other fellow educators has been a real blessing. Of late, my active work has been diminished owing to multiple years of health issues, having had to turn down offers was difficult, but here I am, better equipped with the theoretical knowledge and more prepared to responsibly address the emotional pitfalls.

The class was for 3 hours, and my happiest feedback was from Manju teacher, who had invited me to her school 4 years back. She came and told me that she had reached a bit late, but 5 minutes into the session, she was sure that it had to be Kavya. My energy, passion and truthfulness has been distinctive; hearing these words really helped me, I had been busy and was on the verge of cancelling today’s class. I had forgotten how much each of these classes were helping me, my little bottles of dopamine, my exciting chemicals.

The students were exceptional with their cooperation, interest and attention in this hot weather, with minimum fans; had to give them an electrolyte break (humble morumvellam or chass) and few cool-down and warm-up exercises. Especially the children have been really getting back on track after being severely shaken by the uncertainities offered in the covid period.

Some things still remain – “period blood being impure”, menstrual cup being unsafe, cloth pad being unhygenic and masturbation being a sin. Sex ed is here to stay a longer course, but each day is a new hope. The shake hands and approving smiles from our young friends will keep me going on for long
